The State of Texas is among those that won't be spending any state funds on the 2020 Census count. Instead, local municipalities will foot the bill, along with grants from nonprofits.
According to ABC News, the City of El Paso alone has set aside at least $340,000 for such operations, with some of it coming from grants.
Overall, states are expected to spend billions of dollars on this year’s count, with much of the funding coming from the federal government. In addition, roughly half of the state’s in the country are poised to spend in the neighborhood of $350 million in state funds.
In Texas, U.S. Census Bureau Senior partnership specialist Paulina Lopez added assuring an accurate count ultimately comes down to more than just dollars and cents.
"I think it's being strategic about how can we reach our communities," she said. "What languages do they speak and what messages resonate best with them?"
This year marks the first time people will have the option of filling out the census either in traditional paper format, over the phone with a live person or online.
