The Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) has reported an increase in upstream oil and natural gas employment, with 1,900 new jobs added in February compared to January. This information was released in a press statement on March 28, 2025, citing revised data from the Texas Workforce Commission.

According to TXOGA, since September 2020, the state's upstream oil and gas industry has experienced a net gain of 48,400 jobs, averaging approximately 913 new positions each month. The growth in employment has surpassed declines, with job increases noted in 38 months against 14 months of decreases. These positions are among the highest-paying in Texas, with an average annual salary of about $128,000 as of 2024.

"Reaching an unprecedented production of over 2 billion barrels of oil in 2024 was only possible because of the tremendous capabilities of the men and women who work in the oil and natural gas sector of our economy," said Todd Staples, President of TXOGA. He emphasized that these "resilient and skilled individuals are doing more than ever before and making significant and effective environmental gains in the process."

The upstream sector includes oil and natural gas extraction but excludes downstream and midstream operations such as refining, petrochemicals, fuel wholesaling, pipelines, or utilities. These sectors contribute additional employment across Texas. Job figures also cover "Support Activities for Mining," which is primarily related to oil and gas but includes limited roles in other types of mining.

Established in 1919, TXOGA represents Texas' oil and natural gas industry encompassing major producers and independent operators. Its members account for most of the state's crude oil and natural gas production as well as refinery and pipeline operations. The association focuses on legislative, regulatory, judicial, and public affairs to advocate for policies that support industry growth. It also provides industry data, engages with media outlets, and mobilizes experts to address key energy issues under the guidance of a board comprising over 50 industry leaders.
