Governor Greg Abbott, alongside the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard, is working with the Trump Administration to address border security issues, focusing on stopping the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas. This collaboration, known as Operation Lone Star, has resulted in over 531,700 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 51,800 criminal arrests, including over 44,100 felony charges. Law enforcement has seized over 637 million lethal doses of fentanyl.

The operation seeks to counteract policies from the Biden Administration, and Governor Abbott highlights President Trump's border security efforts, citing a decrease in illegal crossings as evidence. He stated, "President Trump promised he would secure the border, and in fact, he’s done that," while contrasting the current administration's policies.

Further actions by the DPS include recent apprehensions and arrests. A member of the Valluco gang, Michael Anthony Montoya, Jr., was arrested in Cameron County after a high-speed chase, with 200 pounds of marijuana discovered in his vehicle. The Gulf Cartel's involvement was noted when a juvenile guide was arrested for smuggling persons across the Rio Grande in Hidalgo County.

The Texas National Guard plays a key role in the operation. Last week, 55 soldiers were deputized to support Border Patrol, allowing them to take a more active role in border security operations. First Lt. Kenneth Bermuda Cruz emphasized the importance of this deputization in enhancing morale and operational effectiveness. The National Guard also continues patrols on Fronton Island to disrupt cartel activities.

Governor Abbott shared images of Texas National Guard soldiers patrolling the Rio Grande near McAllen, and DPS units successfully apprehended illegal immigrants in Dimmit and Webb Counties. These actions reinforce the operation's focus on preventing cross-border criminal activity.

The Texas National Guard's strategic position on Fronton Island, a previous hotspot for cartel activity, aims to maintain security. Specialist Joshua Rendon expressed his commitment to public safety, stating, "I do believe I'm making a difference when I'm out there... ensuring that the public is safe."
