Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller expressed support for the Texas Legislature's initiatives to establish a signature steak cut that reflects the state's status as a leader in beef production. In a recent statement, Miller emphasized Texas's contribution to the beef industry, saying, “Texas leads the nation in beef production, generating billions for our economy and putting the best steaks on dinner plates across America. It’s about time we had a signature Texas cut to match.”
Miller advocates for either renaming the New York Strip to the “Texas Strip” or recognizing the Tomahawk Ribeye as the state’s premier cut. He believes this designation would not only showcase Texas beef but “cement our place as the global leader in top-quality cattle production.” He assures that “The Texas Department of Agriculture stands ready to market and promote the chosen cut, not just in Texas but worldwide.”
He highlights the importance of the proposed legislation, SCR 26 and HCR 101, stressing that the official Texas distinction should be reserved for beef originating from Texas ranchers. “Given challenges like drought, natural disasters, trade disruptions, and economic uncertainty, our ranchers need more than just a pat on the back,” Miller stated. “This is more than branding a steak; it’s about standing with the men and women who keep Texas fed, fueled, and thriving.”
Maddison Jaureguito, Director of Communications, shared the statement on behalf of Miller and emphasized the significance of supporting local ranchers through this legislative action.
