The Texas Senate has passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 13, a measure urging diplomatic enforcement of the 1944 U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty. Commissioner Sid Miller praised the resolution, emphasizing its importance in addressing Mexico's failure to meet water obligations under the treaty.
"I commend Senator Adam Hinojosa and the Texas Senate for taking decisive action to address Mexico’s ongoing failure to meet its water obligations under the 1944 U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty," Miller stated. He highlighted that this move sends a strong message that Texas will not tolerate water shortages affecting farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.
Miller stressed the significance of agriculture in the Rio Grande Valley's economy and underscored the necessity of a reliable water supply for protecting livelihoods. "Agriculture is the backbone of the Rio Grande Valley’s economy, and ensuring a reliable water supply is critical to protecting the livelihoods of the hardworking men and women who feed and clothe our state and nation," he said.
He also called on House Speaker Dustin Burrows and the Texas House to pass this resolution. Additionally, he urged immediate diplomatic action from the International Boundary and Water Commission to ensure compliance with treaty obligations. "Texas farmers deserve certainty, and they cannot afford to wait. Every drop of water matters, and we must keep fighting to protect our agricultural heritage and rural communities," Miller added.
Director of Communications Maddison Jaureguito released these statements on behalf of Commissioner Sid Miller.
