Texas Association of Counties aids in storm preparedness and recovery

Spring storms are a common occurrence in Texas, often bringing severe weather such as lightning, tornadoes, hail, heavy rain, and high winds. These conditions can cause significant damage to infrastructure including buildings, roofs, vehicles, and electrical systems.

The Texas Association of Counties Risk Management Services (TAC RMP) provides support to counties affected by these storms. Their staff assists with the claims process to ensure necessary repairs are made after storm damage.

Brett Anderson, Property and Auto Claims Program Supervisor for TAC RMP, explained their approach: “We monitor the weather, and when we know there’s been a storm, we’ll check in with the counties to see how they’re doing and see if they need any help or if they have any damages that might need a claim.”

Counties have the option to initiate claims through the TAC website or by contacting them via email or phone in case of power outages. After filing a claim, Anderson advises taking measures to prevent further damage. This includes drying flooded areas and covering damaged structures with tarps or boards. “This will avoid costly secondary damages like, for instance, mold,” he noted.

Preparation is key according to Anderson. He recommends actions such as regular roof inspections and debris removal from drains to reduce potential storm damage. Staying informed through monitoring the National Weather Service is also advised.

“Unfortunately, we are going to have storms, and we are going to have claims,” said Anderson.

For questions regarding storm preparation or coverage details, counties can contact their Risk Management Consultant at county.org/county-information-map.
