The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has issued a public notification regarding a missing radiographic camera in Loving County. The device, which contains radioactive material, is primarily used in the oil and gas industry. According to DSHS, the risk of exposure is low due to the multiple protective layers sealing the material.

The camera belongs to National Inspection Services and disappeared along State Highway 302, about 10 miles east of Mentone, during transportation between work sites. The company is actively searching for it with assistance from DSHS and local authorities. A reward has been offered for its recovery.

"This type of radioactive source is called a 'sealed source' because the radioactive material is sealed inside a capsule," explains DSHS. "It is locked inside the camera with protective shielding and other safety features." The agency emphasizes that radiation levels outside the camera are not dangerous unless someone attempts to open it.

A photo of a similar camera has been provided by DSHS. Anyone who finds the device should avoid trying to open it and contact local law enforcement or Reeves County Emergency Management at 432-287-4125, or use the DSHS 24-hour phone line at 512-458-7460.

For further information, media inquiries can be directed to Chris Van Deusen, Director of Media Relations at 512-776-7119.
