The Texas Department of State Health Services has announced a measles outbreak in Gaines County. Ten cases have been identified, with symptoms appearing within the past two weeks. Eight cases involve school-aged children, while two are under five years old. Seven patients have required hospitalization. All individuals affected are unvaccinated residents of Gaines County.
Given the contagious nature of measles, more cases are expected in Gaines County and nearby areas. The Department is collaborating with South Plains Public Health District and Lubbock Public Health to investigate further.
Vaccination remains the most effective prevention method against measles. The recommended vaccine is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which requires two doses for optimal protection.
Updates will be provided on Tuesdays and Fridays if new cases emerge.
