The 89th Texas Legislature commenced on January 14, 2025, marking the beginning of another legislative session for State Senator Brian Birdwell, who represents Senate District 22. This session will last for 140 days as legislators file bills, debate policies, and enact laws for the state of Texas. Birdwell expressed his ongoing commitment to serving his constituents and described it as "the great privilege of my life."
Since the conclusion of the fourth called special session of the 88th legislative session, Birdwell and his team have remained active. He traveled across Senate District 22 to engage with constituents about past sessions' outcomes and provide updates on community-related activities. His interim schedule included numerous legislative responsibilities as he chaired two committees: the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Economic Development and the Senate Committee on Border Security.
Birdwell highlighted that his Capitol Update will provide information on various topics throughout the session, aiming to keep constituents informed approximately every two weeks. He welcomed those visiting the Texas Capitol to stop by his office located in room 1E.3 in the main Capitol Building.
Both Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Governor Greg Abbott addressed the Texas Senate following the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected Senators during opening ceremonies.
Birdwell emphasized teamwork within his staff by quoting a military maxim: “Your subordinates’ success is your success.” He introduced familiar faces alongside new staff members in his team known as "Team Birdwell." Chief of Staff JW Galloway will oversee operations across Capitol, District, and Committee offices while Legislative Director Gatlin Moncla manages policy operations.
During this initial day of proceedings, Senator Brandon Creighton was sworn in as President Pro Tem for this regular legislative session.
