Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources in anticipation of severe weather conditions across eastern Texas. This directive comes as a precautionary measure due to an increased threat of severe thunderstorms expected to impact North, Central, East, and Southeast Texas starting today.

"Texas is prepared to deploy all necessary resources to help local officials respond to severe weather threats," stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized the importance for Texans and visitors traveling after the Christmas holiday to stay informed about road conditions, have an emergency plan in place, and follow guidance from state and local authorities. Governor Abbott also expressed gratitude towards emergency personnel working during this period.

The National Weather Service has forecasted that these storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, potential tornadoes, and heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding. There is also a possibility of minor river flooding over the coming days with conditions expected to improve early next week.

In response, TDEM has mobilized several resources including Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1) for flood rescue operations. Additionally, standby resources include Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue Teams from both Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2, along with Severe Weather Packages from the Texas Department of State Health Services' Emergency Medical Task Force.

Residents are advised to keep themselves updated by monitoring local forecasts and adhering to instructions from emergency officials. They are encouraged to develop an emergency plan and maintain an accessible supply kit.
