Texas infrastructure projects cut traffic delays despite more drivers

Despite an increase in the number of drivers on Texas roads, traffic delays have decreased due to numerous projects by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). A report from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) reveals that even though miles traveled have increased by 7% over five years, traffic delays are down by 7% in the same period. This has resulted in commuters saving an estimated $915 million in time and fuel costs.

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams commented on the impact of these projects: “We can see that our projects are having a significant impact on our roadways, helping improve efficiency and connectivity across the state.” He emphasized the importance of continuing such projects as Texas's population and economy grow.

The report highlighted that half of the top 100 most congested road segments were under construction in 2023. Many projects were funded through Texas Clear Lanes, initiated by Governor Greg Abbott to reduce congestion. Notable improvements include a 60% reduction in delays at Dallas’s Southern Gateway on I-35E and significant delay reductions on San Antonio’s U.S. 281 project.

These infrastructure improvements not only enhance safety and efficiency but also support trade through the freight industry, contributing to a robust economy. TTI Senior Research Scientist David Schrank noted: "Major transportation investments across Texas, like those in the Texas Clear Lanes initiative...are easing that burden and helping commuters save time and fuel."

Beyond large-scale urban projects, TxDOT's strategy includes managing congestion through operational changes. In Laredo, rerouting truck traffic significantly eased congestion near North America's largest trade border crossing.

A detailed list comparing statewide road segments is available online. Houston’s West Loop remains the most congested road for three consecutive years, followed by Dallas’ Woodall Rogers Freeway and Austin’s I-35 through downtown.
