The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has launched its inaugural Border Mounted Patrol Unit, a team of Texas Highway Patrol Troopers paired with horses to patrol the state's challenging border terrain. This new unit aims to enhance border security through strategic on-the-ground efforts.
"This marks a historic moment for the Texas Department of Public Safety as we continue to innovate and strengthen our efforts to protect the people of Texas," said DPS Director Steven McCraw. "The launch of the Border Mounted Patrol Unit and the graduation of its inaugural class represents our unwavering commitment to enhancing border security utilizing unique and adaptive strategies."
The mounted patrol unit will work in coordination with local, state, and federal partners to locate and apprehend individuals attempting to bypass established border checkpoints. The three teams, consisting of experienced troopers and their Quarter Horse partners, underwent an intensive six-week training program. This included four weeks with the Customs and Border Patrol National Horse Patrol Program's Basic Training Course focusing on navigation, terrain adaptability, tracking, and law enforcement operations on horseback.
After classroom and field training, the teams engaged in two weeks of on-the-job training where they assisted in apprehending 11 individuals attempting illegal entry into the country. They also supported the Kinney County Sheriff’s Office in tracking subjects involved in bail outs. The comprehensive training ensures that both troopers and their equine partners are prepared for the demands of patrolling Texas' border.
Upon graduation, teams will be stationed in Eagle Pass, Carrizo Springs, and Del Rio.
