The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced the graduation of eight new K-9 teams and three certified K-9 Tech Trainers. This addition is expected to bolster DPS's capacity to ensure public safety across Texas. The new teams will offer specialized support in narcotics detection and tracking.
"Our K-9 teams and trainers play an essential role in protecting our communities," said DPS Director Steven McCraw. "The expertise and dedication they bring to their work is unmatched. These graduates exemplify the highest standards of service, so their impact will be felt across the state."
DPS operates one of the nation's leading K-9 programs, with 88 personnel including 76 handlers and a variety of canines trained for different purposes such as narcotics detection, explosive detection, and tracking. The program features several breeds including German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, and a Vizsla.
The recent graduates completed a nine-week training program with an initial six weeks dedicated solely to canine pre-training. Conducted by experienced DPS K-9 trainers, this rigorous training aims to prepare both handlers and dogs for high-pressure situations while maintaining high standards of operational readiness.
Among the new graduates are five teams trained specifically in narcotics detection. These dogs are skilled at identifying controlled substances like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana during vehicle searches, package inspections, and criminal investigations.
Additionally, three teams have been trained in advanced tracking techniques for locating missing persons or fugitives over long distances through various terrains. This training underscores DPS's commitment to excellence in search operations.
Handlers from both disciplines are also educated on canine health awareness and medical care techniques to ensure their partners' safety in challenging environments.
Graduates include Trooper Jeremy Arizola & K-9 Mara (Tracking Handler), Trooper Christopher Cantu & K-9 Eki (Tracking Handler), Trooper Joaquin Garcia & K-9 Tola (Detection Handler), among others.
