Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the City of Navasota has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This designation follows the completion of a multi-step certification process aimed at promoting economic development and job creation related to music in Texas cities.
Governor Abbott stated, "Congratulations to the City of Navasota on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation. Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state." He noted that with support from TMO, the Texas music industry accounts for over 192,000 jobs and generates more than $26 billion annually.
Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst also extended her congratulations, highlighting Navasota's rich musical history: "From the era of famed blues musician ‘Mance’ Lipscomb to today’s music festivals, Navasota provides quality musical experiences that contribute significantly to the local economy."
Representative Kyle Kacal commended Navasota's commitment to economic growth through music, stating, "This well-deserved designation highlights the city’s steadfast commitment to enriching lives through economic growth and opportunity."
Mayor Bert Miller expressed excitement about this recognition aligning with Navasota's status as 'The Blues Capital of Texas.' Jessica Tucker, a member of the Navasota Music Friendly Texas Committee and owner of Rail & Rye, voiced pride in supporting local musicians: "We are committed to cultivating an establishment that embraces and appreciates live music."
Kenny Graves, another committee member and local radio program director, emphasized live music's role in attracting visitors: "A thriving live music scene will play an important part in attracting visitors and offering our residents more opportunities for leisure."
The official certification ceremony will take place on October 19 during the Navasota Blues Music Festival. It will be cohosted by TMO along with city officials. Gini Mascorro from TMO will present the designation.
Navasota now joins 66 other communities recognized under this program since its inception by TMO in 2016. The initiative continues fostering collaboration between music businesses and government entities across Texas.
