The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) has announced funding for the Veterans Transitional Housing Pilot Program. This initiative allocates $400,000 to address transitional and housing needs for veterans in four Texas regions. The program was established by the 88th Texas Legislature, which designated $400,000 annually from the Homeless Housing and Services Program (HHSP) funds to assist veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
TDHCA identified Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio as areas with significant veteran populations requiring assistance. As part of the awards announced, American GI Forum will receive $100,000 to support veterans in Dallas and San Antonio. The United States Veterans Initiative is allocated $100,000 for services in Houston. Meanwhile, the Austin-Travis County Mental and Health Retardation Center will manage $200,000 for veterans in the Austin area.
"TDHCA and our partners are focused on tackling the challenges that force our military men and women into homelessness," stated Bobby Wilkinson, TDHCA’s executive director. "These funds can offer a measure of relief for a veteran whose circumstances have prevented him or her from finding permanent housing, counseling, job training or other services designed to help lead a life off the streets."
Contracts under this program will commence on October 1, 2024, continuing through May 31, 2026.
