The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has made public a report concerning the sustainability and accessibility of the state's Compassionate Use Program (CUP). This report has been shared with members of the Texas Public Safety Commission as well as state lawmakers.

The analysis, initiated in 2023, was conducted by Weeds, Inc., a medical cannabis consulting firm. The report provides recommendations aimed at enhancing the program's accessibility and availability within Texas.

With the 89th Texas Legislature set to convene in January 2025, DPS is not suggesting any immediate changes to CUP. However, state lawmakers in both executive and legislative branches have received the report to consider potential future modifications.

The full report is accessible on the DPS website.

The Compassionate Use Program was established by Senate Bill 339 in 2015. Under this program, DPS manages the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT), which is an online registry for qualified physicians authorized to prescribe low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for patients with specific medical conditions. The department also licenses dispensing organizations and conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations.

Further details about CUP are available online.
