The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a significant allocation of funds for the state's ship channels.

According to an October 3 press release issued by TxDOT, the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) has approved $400 million in Ship Channel Improvement Revolving Fund (SCIRF) loans for two projects located near Beaumont and Brownsville. These channel improvement initiatives are expected to support the state's economic growth, enhance trade, create jobs, and ensure that seaports remain competitive, as said by the state agency.

The funding is a result of legislation passed during the 88th legislative session and signed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2023. Texas Transportation Commissioner Steven D. Alvis expressed gratitude towards the governor for his support, stating that "Texas ship channels and seaports serve as economic engines."

TxDOT has also requested additional funding for port improvements in its 2026-2027 Legislative Appropriations Request.
