The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seeks to end the SH 288 Comprehensive Development Agreement (CDA), an act that will give motorists more free lanes on which to drive.
According to an August 23 press release issued by TxDOT, the state will fully control the SH 288 managed lanes in Harris County.
This will result in average daily toll rates decreasing by 50% and additional free lanes along SH 288, which runs between Houston’s Midtown district and Lake Jackson in Brazoria County.
Gov. Greg Abbott said in the release, "Building roads, reducing tolls, and saving taxpayer money are top priorities and made possible by TxDOT’s decision to terminate the CDA." Abbott added that doing so allows the state to receive more than $2 billion in added valuation.
TxDOT, in turn, will reduce future toll charges and construct more free lanes on SH 288, one of Houston’s busiest roadways.
According to the release, work on the free lanes will commence no later than 2030.
The state plans to assume operations next month, and drivers won’t see any notable changes regarding maintenance, operations, or billing.
