Anita Scott, director of Public Policy at the Texas Home School Coalition, said Texas is one of the freest states for homeschooling. Legally, Texas considers homeschooling a type of private school due to a 1994 Supreme Court ruling, and the Coalition has been protecting this right for over three decades. Scott was a guest on a recent episode of the Texas Talks Podcast.

“Texas is one of the freest states to homeschool," said Scott on a recent edition of the Texas Talks Podcast. “There are no federal regulations for homeschooling, and in 1994, the Texas Supreme Court voted unanimously, 9 to 0, to put it into law. Homeschooling is now considered a type of private school. That's what we've been doing for the last three decades, protecting what was put into law in 1994.”

“We have over 600,000 homeschooled families in Texas," said Scott. “Iit is now a mainstream form of education, it used to be an alternative. It used to be taboo; it was illegal. What we do is advocate through providing our members with a robust amount of curriculum resources."

Anita Scott is the director of Public Policy at the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC). In her role, she and THSC members are dedicated to preserving the rights of Texas families to independently raise and educate their children.

Texas Talks podcast is hosted by Brad Swail. The weekly show is focused on public policy in the state of Texas, with insights from the people and organizations that influence it.
