Approximately 102,000 Californians moved to Texas, more than any other state-to-state relocation in the U.S. in 2022, according to data from the U.S. Census recently analyzed by Texas REALTORS® in its 2024 Relocation Report.

The data also showed that people from Florida and New York were among the top movers to Texas, with 41,000 and 30,000 individuals making the move to Texas. Illinois, Louisiana, Colorado, and Oklahoma followed, each contributing around 25,000 new residents to the Lone Star State.

Texas not only saw an influx of residents from various states, but it also experienced significant outbound movement. Despite being the top source of new Texans, California was also the leading destination for residents leaving Texas. However, this back-and-forth movement resulted in a net increase of 60,000 residents to the Texas population.

Florida emerged as the second-most-popular destination for relocating Texans, with approximately 38,000 individuals leaving the state, followed by Oklahoma with more than 26,000 Texans moving to the Sooner State.

Chairman of Texas REALTORS®, Jef Conn, commented on the recent report, stating, "there are a number of reasons Texas continues to draw people from other states. Many new residents enjoy a lower cost of living in Texas or better job opportunities at companies that expand or relocate here. Texas has vibrant large cities, charming small towns, and rural areas with all the space you’d ever want. You can find pretty much any lifestyle you’re seeking here."

Conn also highlighted the affordability of homeownership in Texas as a significant reasonon, mentioning, "while home prices have gone up, many people who move from other states can still afford more in Texas than the state they came from. They also benefit from the efforts REALTORS® in Texas have made to keep homeownership as affordable as possible."
