Texas Parks & Wildlife announces the First Day Hike program

The Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) has announced the First Day Hike program, a series of activities designed for Texans who wish to visit a state park on the first day of 2024. The program includes ranger-guided walks, bicycle rides, paddling, polar plunges, and unguided walks in Texas parks to encourage people to embrace outdoor activities in the new year.

According to its website, TPWD is the state agency in Texas tasked with managing and preserving the natural and cultural assets of Texas. It also provides Texans with opportunities to hunt, fish, and engage in other outdoor recreation.

In the previous year, the First Day Hike saw record attendance with nearly 8,000 people traversing the state to visit 83 parks in Texas. These individuals hiked, biked, and paddled an estimated total of 17,000 miles.

For those planning to hike, trails in Texas' parks vary in distance and difficulty level. According to a release from TPWD, some trails are short and easy - ideal for families - while others are long and challenging. Trail maps can be found on TPWD's website.

Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks said in a statement that "Last year, Texas led the nation in First Day Hikes participation and miles walked. We invite everyone to come back and be part of the fun again this year as we usher in the next century of memories. Whether visiting for the first time or returning to your favorite park for more fun, there's something for everyone to enjoy."

In its release, TPWD encourages all interested participants to reserve a day pass in advance due to anticipated high attendance across the state; some parks may reach capacity quickly.
