Border Patrol Chief: ‘Laredo Sector apprehended 234 subjects in 30+ events’

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens praised agents for their work in stopping another attempt of smuggling undocumented migrants across the U.S. Border near Laredo, Texas.

"USBP agents in Laredo, TX stopped 4 trailer-tractor smuggling attempts, totaling 64 undocumented migrants hidden within compartments. All smugglers involved were arrested and taken into custody. In FY24 alone, Laredo Sector apprehended 234 subjects in 30+ events.", said Jason Owens.

A press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol indicates that similar incidents have been occurring frequently at the Laredo Sector throughout the year. On Sept. 27, two separate tractor trailers were searched and found to be concealing migrants. The first vehicle held six migrants, the second had 28, along with small amounts of fentanyl and cocaine. All individuals were identified as illegal migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico.

Another incident on Jun. 20 led agents to search a tractor trailer after observing individuals getting inside the trailer. The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted in the inspection, which revealed a dozen individuals, all identified as illegal migrants from Guatemala and Mexico. All migrants were processed according to federal guidelines and drivers prosecuted for human smuggling.

The Laredo Sector of the border covers 96 counties and over 84,000 square miles along the Rio Grande River, reaching as far north as the Oklahoma border. The US Border Patrol website reveals that this sector is responsible for 136 miles of border between the U.S. and Mexico while operating alongside the Rio Grande valley sector which covers the Texas border along the Gulf of Mexico. This sector has eight stations with its headquarters located at 207 W. Del Mar Blvd., Laredo, Texas.
