Most Democrats do not want to increase taxes to cover the COVID-19-related economic downturnaccording to a survey performed by Remington Research Group.

The survey polled 1,224 likely voters in the 2020 General Election, weighted to match the demographics of expected turnout, the methodology notes.

"Remington Research Group conducted a statewide survey amongst likely Republican and Democratic voters on issues relating to the coronavirus pandemic," the survey states. "The survey asked a wide range of questions related to the pandemic."

The survey found that only 9 percent of Democrats think the government should increase taxes to make up for the economic decline caused by the coronavirus. It found that 47 percent of Democrats believe a reduction in government will solve the problem, while 44 percent of are not sure.

The survey also questioned if voters are able to successfully work from home and the results were almost the same between Democrats and Republicans, with 35 percent answering yes and 65 percent answering no.

When asked who should make the decision on when Texans return to work, Democrats were at 22 percent for politicians, 14 percent for bureaucrats, 33 percent for Texas citizens and 30 percent not sure, the poll found.

The survey also found that 82 percent of Democrats believe the government should remain closed and only 13 percent believe the government should reopen. Results for those unsure of what to do were at 6 percent for Democrats.

When asked what they thought of social distancing and other protocols in place, 43 percent of Democrats said that if those protocols are followed, businesses should be allowed to reopen. Almost the same amount — 42 percent — of Democrats believe businesses should still be closed. Only 16 percent of Democrats were unsure.

The survey found that 87 percent of Democrats believe doctors should be allowed to continue treating patients in need of medical procedures if those procedures don't affect coronavirus patients, while 8 percent of Democrats want physicians to remain banned and percent of Democrats were unsure.

McKenzie Taylor with The Texan News tweeted the results, which Ben Shapiro shared. Shapiro noted that the only statistic that really mattered in the poll was regarding social distancing and businesses reopening.

The Texas Democratic Party did not return requests for comment.
