Business owner starts petition to cancel mixed beverage tax amid coronavirus shutdowns

Stephanie Houston, a Texas resident and founder of Hye Rum, has started a Change.org petition with the hopes of getting the Texas mixed drink tax and sales tax canceled during the coronavirus shutdowns.

According to what Stephanie Houston wrote in the petition, the service industry is struggling due to the mandatory closures.

"Restaurants, bars, wineries, distilleries, theaters and other businesses that actively serve food and alcohol are being forced to close," Houston wrote.

Houston said these businesses are in jeopardy and need any assistance available during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Businesses are in jeopardy and can use any and all assistance for the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak. Our distillery in the Texas Hill Country is just a speck on a map of businesses that can use relief immediately for disaster planning ahead," Houston wrote.

In the petition, Houston asks the State of Texas to cancel all gross and sales taxes during the COVID-19 shutdown.

"We are asking the State of Texas to cancel or delay mixed beverage gross and sales taxes, and/or sales tax for a period of time," Houston wrote.
