Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn has reported that incarcerated Mexican cartel members have conveyed to him that "whatever kills the American is good." This statement was made during the House Oversight and Accountability subcommittee meeting on April 16.

"We have solicited intelligence directly from cartel members in jail, asking them the proverbial question: why are you killing your clients with fentanyl," said Waybourn, according to X. "Their simple answer was: whatever kills the American is good with us."

As reported by The Center Square, the purpose of this meeting was to investigate the effects of the Biden administration's border policies on public safety. During his testimony, Waybourn discussed the escalating opioid crisis in Tarrant County and the accompanying rise in violence.

In a written statement, Waybourn detailed the influence cartels are exerting on Tarrant County. As Texas' third largest county and the 14th largest in the nation, with a population of 2.2 million, Tarrant County is experiencing worsening drug-related issues. Waybourn noted a decrease in drug prices; for instance, a fentanyl pill that cost approximately $30 in 2020 now costs only $8. This increased accessibility is leading to a surge in crime, as evidenced by Tarrant County jail's daily average inmate count of 4,300.

According to information available on the Tarrant County website, Waybourn assumed office as sheriff in 2017. Before this appointment, he served as Chief of Police of Dalworthington Gardens Police Department for an impressive tenure of 31 years.
