Texas Department of Public Safety announces new CDL test for AAMVA drivers

Public Safety

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the organization responsible for the welfare and oversight of drivers in Texas, has announced a new Commercial Driver's License (CDL) test for American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) drivers. The comprehensive plan, which is due to be initiated on September 1, 2024, was revealed on November 30.

According to KXAN, the DPS says that the rollout of this initiative will bring about three main developments: modernized programming and pre-destination testing, a checklist for applicants, and an updated CDL manual. The DPS described these advancements as "a more robust CDL testing solution offering standardization with flexibility regarding changing roads and technology."

Your Basin reports that the program is designed to provide a better solution for adjusting to technology changes, particularly those affecting road and route alterations. The DPS articulated its objective by saying "The goal is to create a simpler and more effective testing process that best assesses an applicant’s readiness to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safely."

As per Katy News, the plan is slated to come into effect by Spring 2024 ahead of its full implementation scheduled for September 1. CDLs comprise many different classes and endorsements. This new approach would entail certain requirements and regulations specific to CDL drivers.
