U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Gedion Masunsu, a 28-year-old Ugandan national, into custody. Masunsu faces charges in Massachusetts for two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim, as well as destruction of property. The arrest took place on January 25 in Waltham.
"Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child," stated Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. "We will not tolerate such acts of violence against the members of our New England communities. ICE stands firm in our commitment to prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from our streets."
Masunsu attempted to enter the United States at Boston Logan International Airport on April 14, 2021, using an expired visa. At that time, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued him an order of expedited removal but paroled him into the country.
The Waltham Police Department initially arrested Masunsu on January 6 for the aforementioned charges. On that day, ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the Waltham District Court; however, the court did not honor the detainer and released Masunsu from custody.
Following his recent arrest by ICE, Masunsu remains in their custody.
