U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a 29-year-old Brazilian man in Waltham, Massachusetts. The individual was convicted of manslaughter in Brazil for an incident involving a motor vehicle and had evaded his prison sentence by fleeing to the United States.
Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, stated, "This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country by hiding out in Massachusetts." She added that the individual posed a threat to local communities, emphasizing that "ICE will not allow our New England communities to become a safe haven for the world’s bad actors."
The Brazilian court sentenced him on December 11, 2018, to four years, eight months, and 21 days for the crime. However, he entered the United States illegally near Hidalgo, Texas on November 22, 2018. He was subsequently detained by U.S. Border Patrol and released with an expedited removal order.
The fugitive remains in ICE custody after his recent arrest. The public is encouraged to report any crimes or suspicious activities via the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or through their online tip form.
