Representative Katrina Pierson has introduced House Bill 3971, aiming to transform the Texas Sunset Commission into a "Department of Government Oversight & Efficiency" (DOGE). The proposed department is inspired by Elon Musk's national team known for identifying wasteful federal spending. The goal is to ensure that recommendations are directed to the Texas Legislature.
"Given the unprecedented waste uncovered at the federal level by Elon Musk and his DOGE team, I believe Texas has an opportunity to lead by example," said Representative Pierson. "My DOGE bill ensures we have our own dedicated organization to investigate inefficiencies within state bureaucracy. By implementing our own DOGE program, we are taking a proactive step to strengthen transparency in public spending and save taxpayer dollars."
The Texas DOGE will assess state agencies' performance, financial practices, and operations using detailed processes aimed at reducing state expenditure and minimizing waste. Additionally, it mandates evaluations of any state agency headquartered in or near Austin to determine if relocation could result in cost savings.
Representative Pierson highlighted the bill's alignment with Texas's commitment to fiscal responsibility: "Texans are being taxed out of their homes, any penny of government waste needs to be discovered and put back into the pockets of taxpayers. By forming our own DOGE, we can more effectively root out unnecessary costs while championing innovation and best practices in government."
