An investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has resulted in charges against Mario Antonio Mejia-Calderon, a 34-year-old Honduran national. Mejia-Calderon is accused of possessing a counterfeit permanent resident card, commonly known as a green card, and illegal re-entry into the United States after deportation.
If convicted on both counts, Mejia-Calderon could face up to 12 years in federal prison. He was arrested and is currently detained while awaiting trial.
Authorities discovered Mejia-Calderon unlawfully present in the U.S. with a counterfeit green card on January 24. He had previously been deported on June 11, 2013.
The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Coolican.
