Commissioner Sid Miller has expressed approval of the USDA's recent decision to shift strategies in handling the bird flu outbreak. He praised President Donald J. Trump for taking decisive action to address what he described as a mishandling of the situation by the Biden administration.
According to Miller, "I commend President Donald J. Trump for his decisive action in addressing the catastrophic mishandling of the bird flu outbreak by the Biden administration, which has devastated our nation’s poultry industry and driven up costs for American consumers." He cited USDA data indicating that since 2022, over 150 million birds have been lost due to depopulation efforts related to bird flu, including more than 123 million laying hens.
Miller noted that egg prices had significantly increased under President Biden's administration, rising from $1.60 per dozen in February 2021 to $4.10 by December 2024, and reaching a record high of $4.95 per dozen recently.
The Trump administration is focusing on enhanced biosecurity measures and targeted medical interventions instead of mass culling infected flocks. Miller believes this approach is more sustainable and effective, stating, "While some depopulations may still be necessary in severe cases, this new strategy offers a more sustainable and effective path forward."
He also expressed confidence in National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins' leadership on this issue: "Working together, we can ensure the resilience of our poultry industry and put an end to the unnecessary financial burden placed on American consumers due to the mismanagement of the previous administration.”
Director of Communications Maddison Jaureguito released this statement.
