Texas Business Coalition has expressed its support for Governor Greg Abbott's reaffirmation of Texas' business-friendly policies during his State of the State Address on February 2, 2025. This endorsement was communicated through a press release issued on February 3.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, in his address, Abbott highlighted Texas' economic prowess, describing it as the "most powerful economy in America" and a leader in job creation, development, and business growth. He pointed to advancements in technology, semiconductors, and space exploration and mentioned initiatives like the Texas Stock Exchange and Space Commission. Abbott also announced the formation of the Small Business Freedom Council aimed at reducing "rules, fees, and regulations."
“One of the most inappropriate but often overlooked examples of waste and abuse in Texas government is the policy of collecting dues for unions at the state and municipal levels,” said Annie Spilman of the Texas Business Coalition, according to the press release. “Why should businesses care? Because millions of dollars collected by our government for these unions are used to fund campaigns against Texas businesses, including organizing against independent businesses, supporting anti-business candidates and policies, and fueling frivolous lawsuits against mom-and-pop shops across Texas.”
The coalition further indicated that Abbott’s remarks signal an effort to address small business issues through initiatives like creating Small Business Freedom Councils. Spilman suggested that Abbott's regulatory streamlining efforts "can go even further by encouraging legislative action to end Texas’ involvement in collecting union dues from public employee paychecks."
