Governor Greg Abbott has extended his congratulations to the City of Giddings for being recognized as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas. This recognition marks the inaugural year of the program, which aims to boost tourism as an economic growth strategy. The designation highlights the efforts of the Giddings Chamber of Commerce in promoting local tourism, job creation, and attracting visitors both nationally and internationally.
"Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas," stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized that travelers contribute over $193.8 billion annually to the state's economy and support 1.3 million jobs. Abbott encouraged other communities in Texas to seek this certification to enhance local tourism and employment opportunities.
Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell praised Giddings for its "rich cultural heritage and welcoming spirit," noting its German and Czech traditions, charming downtown area, and vibrant events that offer an authentic Texas experience.
Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst also commended Giddings on its designation, highlighting its attractions such as historical sites, festivals, shopping options, and outdoor activities that benefit the local economy. She acknowledged the Chamber's role in promoting these features.
Representative Stan Gerdes expressed pride in Giddings' achievement, describing it as a testament to the community's efforts in making it a notable destination within Texas.
Mayor Joel Lopez expressed honor at receiving this recognition for Giddings' commitment to "Hometown Hospitality." He invited adventure seekers to explore what Giddings has to offer—from BBQs and thrift shopping to craft beer tasting and park visits.
Denice Harlan, President of the Giddings Chamber of Commerce, noted their location along a well-traveled corridor enhances their understanding of tourism's economic value. Spencer Schneider, City Manager of Giddings, highlighted how this recognition will positively impact local attractions by sharing their culture with visitors.
Tim Walther, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged his staff's dedication towards achieving this certification. He believes this recognition will significantly promote Giddings while enhancing their Chamber's profile.
