Governor Greg Abbott has highlighted Texas' significant strides in the energy sector throughout 2024, reinforcing the state's position as a global leader in energy production. He emphasized the contributions of industry workers and reiterated commitments to bolster Texas' electric grid to meet increasing demands.
"Texas would not be the energy capital of the world without the hard work of the men and women of the energy industry," said Governor Abbott. "As Texas continues to experience unprecedented growth, we will remain a leader in energy while also bolstering the Texas grid to meet the growing demands of our great state."
Governor Abbott noted that dispatchable power capabilities have been increased over the past year, ensuring reliable access to power for Texans. Efforts include prioritizing nuclear energy deployment through initiatives like the Texas Energy Fund, which aims to provide substantial loans and grants for expanding power capacity.
Throughout 2024, Governor Abbott participated in various discussions emphasizing Texas' top rankings in wind and solar power generation. At events such as the Dallas Citizens Council annual meeting and Lone Star Energy Forum, he underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen nuclear supply chains and advocated for increased nuclear energy use.
In February, alongside Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt at the NAPE Summit, Abbott addressed new records set by Texas' energy industry, including crude oil and natural gas production. He also expressed intentions to protect this vital sector from federal intervention.
A groundbreaking ceremony earlier this year marked another milestone with two new Lower Colorado River Authority peaker plants underway in Maxwell. These plants are expected to add significant megawatts to Texas' grid by 2025. "To keep the Texas economy booming, we need to continue building affordable, reliable power," said Abbott.
In July, Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick discussed plans for expanding the Texas Energy Fund from $5 billion to $10 billion due to overwhelming interest from applicants seeking support for natural gas plant construction.
Last month saw further developments with a report released by Governor Abbott and PUCT on advancing nuclear reactor technology within Texas. The initiative aims at enhancing electric reliability while fostering economic opportunities within this sector.
“Texas is ready to be No. 1 in advanced nuclear power,” stated Governor Abbott regarding these efforts towards developing an advanced nuclear industry capable of sustaining future demands across one of America’s fastest-growing states.
