Governor Greg Abbott has announced the allocation of over $17 million in grants for infrastructure projects in Texas military communities. The funding comes from the Texas Military Preparedness Commission’s (TMPC) Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant (DEAAG) program. These grants aim to support military installations and safeguard jobs that could be affected by future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) processes.
“America is the land of the free thanks to the brave,” Governor Abbott stated. He emphasized the importance of the U.S. Army Futures Command headquarters and 15 major military installations in Texas, which contribute over $151 billion to the state's economy and support more than 677,000 jobs. “This $17 million in grant funding will help ensure these Texas military facilities are up-to-date with the latest technology and support their infrastructure.”
Since 2015, Governor Abbott has awarded over $146 million through the DEAAG program to military communities. The recent grants for FY 2024-2025 will benefit several entities:
- City of Copperas Cove: $5 million for Fort Cavazos – Energy Resilience Storage System
- City of Wichita Falls: $1 million for Sheppard Air Force Base – Runway Strobe Light & Control Panel Replacement Project
- Ark-Tex Council of Governments: $5 million for Red River Army Depot – Riverbend Water Resources District Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant
- City of Corpus Christi: $330,000 for Corpus Christi Army Depot – Condensate Return Station Replacement
- Tom Green County: $4.8 million for Goodfellow AFB – Defense Access Control Point
- City of Corpus Christi: $988,000 for Corpus Christi Naval Air Station – Lift Station Modernization
The TMPC advises both Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature on defense-related issues, aiming to preserve and expand military missions and installations within Texas. The commission consists of 13 members serving staggered six-year terms, typically representing an installation in their community.
