CLEAT, the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, has issued a statement regarding Austin Police Officer Christopher Taylor. According to CLEAT, Officer Taylor acted within his training, written policies, and the law when he defended himself and others on July 31st, 2019. Despite this, District Attorney Jose Garza indicted and tried Taylor in what CLEAT describes as a politically motivated effort.
CLEAT previously warned about DA Garza's intentions in April 2021. They exposed his agenda to prosecute police officers by recruiting prosecutors specifically for this purpose. An internal email obtained by CLEAT said: "I’m reaching out in the hopes that you may be looking to prosecute police officers, or that you know someone who is!"
The organization claims that over thirty officers have been wrongfully indicted under Garza's tenure, affecting their lives and careers. CLEAT argues that this case could have significant implications for law enforcement training and recruitment across Travis County and beyond.
The statement highlights concerns about how departments can hire and retain qualified applicants knowing they might face prosecution. It also questions how training should adapt following Taylor's conviction.
CLEAT expressed respect for the judicial process but called the conviction a "politically motivated miscarriage of justice." The organization remains committed to providing legal protection for Taylor through appellate lawyers and other available avenues.
The statement concludes with a call for prayers for the Taylor family and all law enforcement officers who continue to serve under challenging circumstances.
