Abilene State Park is the next destination for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's (TPWD) Centennial Time Capsule. The capsule is currently on a 50-year journey to visit every state park in Texas.
According to a November 8 press release issued by TPWD, the time capsule contains an object from each state park and support program, encapsulating 100 years of Texas State Parks history. It was first displayed at Mother Neff State Park in April. Mother Neff State Park Superintendent Melissa Chadwick said that many visitors have been impressed with the fact that the capsule was constructed from a pecan tree originating from the initial land deeded to Mother Neff State Park by Isabella Neff.
The press release also said that Abilene State Park will retain possession of the time capsule until next spring. Candyce Johnson, the park’s assistant superintendent, expressed excitement about hosting the time capsule, describing it as an "important piece of Texas State Park history."
The release detailed that the time capsule stands five feet tall and weighs 300 pounds, making it large enough to carry more than 100 items. According to Texas State Parks Exhibits Manager Stephen Garrett, the time capsule is unique because no one has "ever made a time capsule quite like this before."
