The National Center for Energy Analytics (NCEA) has released a report authored by Senior Fellow Tristan Abbey, which examines the current state of U.S. liquid natural gas (LNG) exports and suggests strategies to maintain and expand the nation's leadership in the global LNG market. The report highlights the historical rise of U.S. LNG exports and stresses the importance of reforms to seize what Abbey describes as a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity.

Scott Tinker, an NCEA Advisor and Director Emeritus of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, commented on the growing global demand for natural gas: “Natural gas consumption is growing in every major geopolitical region in the world. It has a fundamental role to play in our energy future... LNG is the only way to move natural gas across the oceans, making it globally fungible. To politically limit U.S. LNG is silly.”

Terrence Keeley, another NCEA Advisor and chairman of 1PointSix LLC, noted: “Abbey aptly highlights the incongruity between global market realities and the counterproductive politicization of LNG export regulation... Washington policymakers should heed the recommendations in this critical and timely study.”

The report outlines three pathways for reforming LNG exports: reversing the export pause, revising the Department of Energy’s export authorization process, and establishing an independent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission focused on technical reviews.

Mark P. Mills, Executive Director of NCEA, emphasized: “That the global market will consume far more LNG is clear to all serious observers. We have a choice of letting American companies serve that demand or throttling them...”
