The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the largest nonpartisan organization of state legislators, gave Texas Senator Paul Bettencourt (SD-7) the "2023 Legislator of the Year" for his work to pass historic property tax relief in Texas this year. This award recognizes lawmakers who demonstrate leadership and commitment to ALEC’s principles of limited government, free markets and federalism.
ALEC believes that all Americans deserve an efficient, effective and accountable government that puts the people in control. ALEC is a forum for stakeholders to exchange ideas and develop real, state-based solutions to encourage growth, preserve economic security, and protect hardworking taxpayers.
Senator Paul Bettencourt (SD-7), first elected in 2014, was the Chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee and the lead sponsor on SB-2 and SB-3 which would provide the opportunity for Texans to save $18 billion in property taxes.
SB-2 and SB-3 passed in the second special session this year and were signed by Governor Greg Abbott on July 22, 2023.
In November, 83% of Texans voted to approve Proposition 4, the $18 billion in property tax cuts for homeowners and businesses.
In response to receiving the award, Senator Bettencourt said "thanks to those who voted for SB 2 and 3 in the Legislature, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and most importantly, all the Texas voters who voted 83% for a whopping $18 billion tax reduction plan!"
